Auto compressors are typically used to power a car's air conditioning system, according to Family Car Parts. A compressor is a pumping device that's fastened to the car engine by a belt assembly. Its main job is to compress and transfer refrigerant gas through the car's A/C system. Rotary screw air compressors are a kind of gas compressor that uses a positive displacement, rotary-type mechanism. Auto shops use rotary screw compressors in place of piston compressors because they are ideal for when you require massive volumes of high-pressure air. Well, this refrigerant and all the other parts that go with it to make your system churn are absolutely NO GOOD without the AC compressor. This magical little pump moves that refrigerant throughout the AC system. The compressor keeps the flow of refrigerant going and keeps your vehicle cool.

You will be fine as long as you don't need or want AC in your car. Your AC pulley is a free spinning pulley that has a clutch on it. It will spin freely until you turn the air conditioning on. If the clutch doesn't work properly, you will still be able to drive your car. Turn on the AC. Connect a pressure gauge to the low side of the AC compressor, typically found on the firewall passenger side in the engine compartment. Add approximately 2 oz. of Freon to determine whether the compressor kicks on (if it does, you will hear a loud click followed by a puttering sound).
