In using a computer as a tool in composition, the composer programs the computer to produce pitches, rhythms, tone colours, and other musical elements and to screen these elements through criteria also chosen by the composer. In one, the computer is used as a tool to provide output in the form of an alphanumeric representation of standard music notation or the actual printing of that notation. Then the notated music is performed by musicians using standard instrumental and vocal ensembles. The word music comes from the Greek word (mousike), which means "(art) of the Muses". Researchers in New Zealand say they have restored the first recording of computer-generated music, created in 1951 on a gigantic contraption built by the British computer scientist Alan Turing. Music is performed with a vast range of instruments and vocal techniques ranging from singing to rapping; there are solely instrumental pieces, solely vocal pieces (such as songs without instrumental accompaniment) and pieces that combine singing and instruments.
