Die and Burr

Burrs are most commonly created by machining operations, such as grinding, drilling, milling, engraving or turning. It may be present in the form of a fine wire on the edge of a freshly sharpened tool or as a raised portion of a surface; this type of burr is commonly formed when a hammer strikes a surface. Is that bur is a rough, prickly husk around the seeds or fruit of some plants while burr is a sharp, pointy object, such as a sliver or splinter or burr can be a rough humming sound or burr can be (obsolete) a metal ring at the top of the hand-rest on a spear or burr can be (british). Burrs or burs (sometimes called rotary files) are small cutting tools; not to be confused with small pieces of metal formed from cutting metal, used in die grinders, rotary tools, or dental drills.

Poisson burrs With poisson (pronounced 'pwahs-soh') burrs, the machined material bulges outwards when the tool is applied to the workpiece under a downward force. This burr can also occur on the edge of the workpiece when the tool removes a layer from the surface laterally.
