The main components of grid tie solar kits are the solar panels and the inverter (and in some cases power optimizers as well) - but cables, wiring, and racking for roof-mounted installation are included as well. The simplest definition of a grid-tied solar system is one that is connected to the electrical power grid. The system is reliant on this grid to produce usable solar energy and funnel excess energy for net metering, clean energy credits, or later usage. Batteries eat into your ROI (return on investment), and grid-tied properties don't need them. You don't need to go “off the grid” to get the benefits of solar power. If your property has access to power lines, grid-tied solar is the smartest option.

Grid-tie inverters convert DC electrical power into AC power suitable for injecting into the electric utility company grid. The grid tie inverter (GTI) must match the phase of the grid and maintain the output voltage slightly higher than the grid voltage at any instant.
