Guny Bags

Bags which are made of burlap are known as gunny bags or burlap bags. Although these sacks were developed to ship and transport agricultural commodities such as wheat, potatoes, corn and coffee, it has a wide range of uses. Burlap is basically a fabric which is woven and made from natural fibers such as jute.

It was because gunny bags would serve the purpose. The main aim is to transport materials and a coarse loosely woven bag would suit the purpose. It was also very cost effective. Jute bags used to be available at 10% the cost of cotton.

In summer, ice is kept wrapped in a gunny bag because air is filled in the fine pores of the gunny bag,which is the insulator of heat. The air does not allow heat from outside to pass through it to the ice. Thus, the ice is prevented from melting point.
